First Love Poem
~ My First Crush

by Hunter Dasten
I have seen the sunset in every season too many
times
not to patronize my own recollection.
But I will do my best to speak with the utmost of
sincerity
and respect for my youthful emotions.
For weeks I'd see you in the halls at school,
walking between class in those single files lines.
Every now and then I'd muster the courage to pass
you a note,
through a friend of course.
Well one day you held the door open
for all the kids headed to lunch.
I spotted you from five yards away,
and as I walked time slowed to a halt.
I felt as if my body had turned to maple syrup.
Those dozen steps were exhausting
as my mind raced each second
to find the perfect thing to say.
Something poetic!
Something romantic!
Something every girl would love to hear!
Anything, oh anything,
but "Hello."
Maybe, "How are you doing?"
"Feel like seeing a movie?"
"How about Tuesday, my mom will drive!"
But no, oh no!
The only thing that came out,
was "Hello."
